Children and Dandelions in Austin, TX

Dandelion, a pesky weed that lawn owners go to great lengths to eliminate? Or dandelion, a sunny flower that has delighted and granted the wishes of generations of children?

The word dandelion comes from the French dent-de-lion, meaning “lion’s tooth”, in reference to the plant’s jagged leaves. Though often dismissed as a nuisance, dandelions play a valuable role in our earth’s health. Their deep, wide-spread roots aerate the soil and draw up nutrients to share with other plants. As one of the first blooms of spring, dandelions provide an early food source for pollinators. A resilient plant, dandelions can be found on every continent except Antarctica. And they’re not just hardy; dandelions are also edible and nutritious! So the next time your child picks a dandelion clock and makes a wish on those fluffy seeds, remember, they’re not spreading weeds. They’re helping the earth!
